Fishing for plastic

Fishermen in India have begun to remove plastic from the ocean as they fish, removing over 25 tons of waste in the first 10 months of the project.

As trawlers drag their nets in the waters of the Arabian Sea, they gather plastic along with their fish. Until recently, they simply tossed the plastic back in. But a new program, Suchitwa Sagaram, which translates to "Clean Sea," trains the trawlers to bring the plastic back to shore.

The results have been astounding.

Once the plastic is brought to shore, it is fed into plastic shredding machines and used to add to India's more than 34,000 km of plastic roads.

India also recently announced its intention to eliminate all single-use plastic by 2022.

These initiatives and others like them provide an example to Western nations as the world fights plastic pollution.
